Is Your Car Affected By The Takata Airbags Recall?

The airbags have been associated with 20 deaths globally, including one death in Australia a year ago.

"I have today issued a compulsory recall notice for vehicles fitted with defective Takata airbags, following an extensive safety investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission", Mr Sukkar said.

Mr Sukkar ordered manufacturers to replace risky units within two years.

Prior to the compulsory recall, however, not all vehicles with defective Takata airbags were recalled.

The government will recall cars with faulty Takata airbags that can explode, causing severe injuries to the driver or passenger, according to multiple reports.

An investigation a year ago by Australian consumer rights group Choice found that in some cases, automakers used defective Takata airbags as temporary replacements for the ones already in the cars because of a lack of available parts.

A number of vehicle suppliers in Australia have voluntarily recalled approximately 2.7 million vehicles containing defective Takata airbags since 2009.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, peak body for Australia's vehicle industry, did not welcome the ACCC's initial proposal for mandatory recalls in 2017.

The assistant minister said that 4 million Australian cars in total had been affected by the defective airbags, or about two in seven cars on the road.

"It is an indictment of this government that they have taken so long to pull the trigger on a compulsory recall".

The initial voluntary recall involved 2.7 million (including 115,000 with the high-risk alpha airbags) and so far 1.7 million have had airbags replaced (including 90,000 alpha airbags).

Voluntary recalls in Australia have previously been announced by big vehicle brands including BMW, Chevrolet, Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANF), and Toyota (TM).

"All must be replaced by the end of 2020", he said.

"We also consulted with some manufacturers of other airbags so we could get some sense of when other airbags would be available, so the replacement could work in a very practical way". Owners will be able to enter their vehicle's VIN and check to see if it has one of the faulty airbags, and see when they can expect to have them replaced.

This is the biggest recall in Australia's history.

"They've been slow to communicate, slow to get the parts in and slow to replace air bags and sometimes said things to consumers that were unfortunate, like: 'Come back in a year's time and, by the way, in the meantime don't drive the car,"' Sims said.

In total, at least 100 million units across all vehicle manufacturers have been affected globally.

A list of affected vehicles could be viewed here.

Second to this, a subset of the Takata airbags are particularly susceptible to risky explosion. "The soonest it will materialise, we're advised by all the experts, is six years, but it can be anywhere between six and 25 years depending on the geographic location of the vehicle".
