NFL Teams Eye Kirk Cousins

The Kirk Cousins sweepstakes could come down to four teams trying to land the free agent Washington Redskins quarterback.

The teams in question are planning how to structure a contract for Cousins, with the clubs reportedly planning short-term deals - potentially three years - with a high guarantee in the contract, per Schefter.

The Jets will be joined in the hunt for the to-be free agent quarterback by the Broncos, Cardinals and Vikings, ESPN reported Saturday, narrowing the field for a rare quality starting QB to hit the open market.

On Friday, Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson said Cousins could be looking for a deal from three to four years with $30 million per year, with most of those dollars guaranteed.

Cousins played the last two seasons for Washington on a franchise tag.

The Michigan State product is coming off a third straight strong campaign, throwing for 4,093 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions over 16 games.

The Redskins traded with the Kansas City Chiefs to acquire Alex Smith on January 30, agreeing to a four-year extension with the veteran.

Cousins will command big bucks when free agency negotiating officially begins March 12. "But we haven't really talked about that".

The Cardinals don't have a quarterback under contract for 2018, although 11-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald made his best pitch to Cousins at an impromptu meeting at an Atlanta airport. With Cousins tagged, the Redskins could look to trade him for more than the compensation pick they will receive from letting him walk.
