Nebraska and Iowa lawmakers are urging Trump to reconsider his tariffs policy

Stressing the need for "flexibility" while protecting the country's national security, Trump also said that other countries could negotiate bilaterally with the United States to get exemptions and reductions in their tariff rates.

Not only did Prime Minister Justin Trudeau personally call the president this week to plead for the exemption, but he and his cabinet ministers have for months lobbied American politicians to keep the borders as open as possible for trade.

The calls, some of which came before the tariffs were implemented, illustrate how the mere threat of trade duties rattled the global community.

Colorado's congressional delegation includes some of the prominent Republicans pushing back on President Trump's announcement Thursday afternoon to place a 25 percent tariff on steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports. A senior US official said the measures would take effect about two weeks after Trump signs the proclamation.

Mexico and Canada, both of whom are among the largest steel exporters to the US, have already been excluded from the tariffs.

However, Trump indicated that the Australian could be the third country. But Sasse said that wouldn't happen in time to counteract the effects of Trump's tariffs.

"He is committed to having a very fair and reciprocal military and trade relationship", Trump tweeted.

He says that's eroding the us steel industry and posing a threat to national security.

Spoke to PM @TurnbullMalcolm of Australia. When Sanders first announced that Trump would meet with people from the video game industry, the ESA said it had not received an invite.

The US's "abuse" of national security concerns as a reason for implementing the measures will lead to "a serious attack on normal worldwide trade order", the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its web site, adding that "China is firmly opposed". It will all work out!

Some strategists for the Republicans believe that the tariffs imposed by Trump could be timed in part to sway voters in this steel country of Pennsylvania where there will be a special election next Tuesday for a seat in the House of Representatives.

U.S. Reps. Don Bacon and Adrian Smith of Nebraska have signed on to letters urging the president to reconsider.

Brussels has warned it could tax imports of politically sensitive American products like orange juice or motorcycles in response to Trump's tariffs.

However, as NPR's Anthony Kuhn notes, "Despite China's objections, the tariffs are not likely to do it much damage, since less than 2 percent of China's steel exports go to the U.S".

"He asked a lot of questions and he raised concerns with the violent nature of these games and asked the question: Is this causing the kids to have (this) violent behavior?".

During a press conference Friday, Japan's minster for economy, trade and industry, Hiroshi Sei said the Japanese government regretted the imposition of the new import tariffs, and would consider "necessary measures in the framework of the World Trade Organization".
