Apple to Launch New Entry-Level MacBook Soon

The new 12-inch Retina MacBook was seen as the Air's replacement, and Apple did kill the 11-inch model. It'll be priced somewhere around the $999 price point the current Air sits at, although it may cost a bit more or less. The new design seeks to keep crumbs and dust out of Apple's laptop scissor switches.

We reported earlier this month that according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Apple will be releasing a cheaper MacBook Air at the end of this year.

Apple is looking to announce an entry-level Macbook variant as soon as the end of 2018's second quarter, possibly around the company's developer conference WWDC 2018.

This rumour is given fuel, as not only does the current MacBook sport a Retina display, but LG's display-making division has been ramping up production of a-SI panels sporting a Retina-grade resolution of 2,560x1,600. The MacBook, meanwhile, has a 12-inch display with 2304 x 1440 resolution.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro and 12-inch MacBook both now start at $1,299, and Apple could really use a more affordable option in it lineup. These are thought to be for a new MacBook Air, which now comes with a 1,440 x 900 resolution screen.

Hsiao pointed out that Apple originally looked to reduce cost by seeking panel supply for the new MacBook from a China-based maker, but the US-based vendor has chose to source the panels from Korea-based LG Display due to issues at the China supplier.

Quanta / Foxconn will make a split of the orders 70 / 30 respectively.

Meanwhile, the upstream supply chain has recently begun shipping components for iPad Pro upgrades and a new low-priced 9.7-inch iPad - a refreshed version of its 2017 counterpart. Apple sold slightly more than 5 million Macs in the company's first quarter for 2018, which is down 5 percent compared to past year.
