Special CBI judge Sunil Rana said the social status of the accused can not be the basis for a separate prison. After being grilled in police custody during the last few days, the CBI on Monday produced Karti in a Delhi court after his three-day police custody in the INX Media corruption case expired.

The counsel had sought a separate cell for Karti Chidambaram while citing possible threats from "terrorists" lodged at Tihar jail during P Chidambaram's stint as home minister. Karti alleges that the investigation against him is "borne out of political vendetta" and that the CBI is "acting at the behest of the central government" to malign the image of his father P Chidambaram.

The businessman also demanded home cooked food, medicines, toiletries and spectacles. "He be produced on March 24", the special judge said. "The lock up incharge and the jail superintendent of Tihar jail, are directed to provide and ensure proper safety and security to the accused during the judicial custody as per rules", he said.

It also said his bail plea would be heard on March 15 as scheduled.

Yesterday, the Delhi Court extended the CBI custody of Chidambaram, till March 12.

"Since the bail application is already fixed for filing of reply/consideration on March 15, the present application is dismissed", the court said.

Karti was arrested on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with the FIR lodged on 15 May.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the special court that the CBI had recovered evidence to prove that Karti Chidambaram had direct links with Advantage Strategic, which allegedly received lakhs of rupees for facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals for INX Media and Aircel companies. Karti has been in CBI custody for questioning since his arrest from Chennai airport on February 28 over alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was Union finance minister.

The interim relief from "any coercive action" taken by the ED came a day after the Supreme Court transferred to the Delhi High Court, his plea seeking quashing of summons issued by the probe agency.

After confirming that she had paid a bribe to Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case, Indrani Mukerjea has now agreed to identify the location too.
