$560M Powerball victor can remain anonymous, NH judge rules

Judge Charles Temple listens to attorney Steven M. Gordon who represents lottery winner"Jane Doe, during a hearing in the Jane Doe v. NH Lottery Commission case at Hillsborough Superior Court in Nashua N.H. Tuesday Feb. 13 2018

The winning ticket was purchased on January 6 at Reeds Ferry Market in Merrimack, near Nashua. The woman's lawyers have argued that she is part of a group that "has historically been victimized by the unscrupulous", and that she made a mistake by signing her name on the ticket, when if she had set up an anonymous trust, she would have been able to avoid identifying herself in that way.

"If I told you she was ecstatic it would be an understatement", Shaheen said in an email to CNNMoney.

The New Hampshire Lottery Commission says it respects a judge's decision to let a woman who won a Powerball jackpot worth almost $560 million keep her identity private.

The mystery victor of the $560 million Powerball jackpot can remain anonymous, a judge ruled Monday, saying the New Hampshire woman's right to privacy outweighs public interests.

The judge ruled the New Hampshire Lottery Commission can not release the woman's name or address.

According to Doe's civil complaint, she visited the commission's website after learning she won and followed the agency's instructions for redeeming her prize, signing the back of the ticket and printing her address and phone number.

Judge Charles Temple is presiding over the bid by New Hampshire lotto victor "Jane Doe" to preserve her anonymity in Hillsborough Superior Court.

The woman's lawyers argued her privacy interests outweigh what the state said is the public's right to know who won the money in the nation's eighth-largest lottery jackpot.

Should her identity be revealed, "she will be subject to an alarming amount of harassment, solicitation and other unwanted communications", Judge Charles Temple of the Hillsborough Superior Court Southern District wrote in a 15-page decision. The woman ended up establishing the Good Karma Family Trust of 2018.

She had already received her after-tax winnings of US$264 million while the judge mulled her claim to privacy.

"With another major winter storm in the forecast, personal and public safety are top priorities", said Michael Sweeney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery in a written statement. They said she would give $150,000 to Girls Inc. and $33,000 apiece to three chapters of End 68 Hours of Hunger in the state.

Lawyer William Shaheen said Monday the woman is from Merrimack, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Concord (KAHN'-kard). "That said, we will consult with the Attorney General's office to determine appropriate next steps regarding the case".
