Afghanistan Through To Super Sixes In WC Qualifiers

The winners of the two classification playoffs - between Netherlands (Group A, 4th spot) and Hong Kong (Group B, 5th spot), and PNG (Group A, 5th spot) and Nepal (Group B, 4th spot) will square-off in the 7th place playoff, while the losers will play in the 9th place playoffs. The three teams, and Netherlands, make up the bottom two of both groups.

Mar 13, 2018-Young Rohit Kumar Paudel forged a match-winning partnership with Sompal Kami to hand Nepal victory over Hong Kong in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers to keep alive their hopes of earning the one-day worldwide (ODI) status.

Their last Group B match is against Zimbabwe on Monday and if they win it they will carry four points to the Super Six stage.

For Nepal, Super Sixes was mathematically possible, practically not, but a victory meant there was still a chance to get ODI status for next four years. If Hong Kong beat Nepal, they will be the third team from Group B to advance to the next round. The bowlers had Nepal in early trouble but their sixth wicket partnership took them to victory in 40.4 overs.

Opting to bat first, Hong Kong managed to score 153 runs before falling out at the 49th over.

Alternatively, if the Windies lose their last two matches, the UAE beat Ireland on Monday and the Netherlands beat PNG, then Ireland and the UAE will be tied with three wins apiece, while the Windies and the Netherlands will have two wins each.

Nepal's chase began with a solid first-wicket partnership of 41 before seamer Aizaz Khan had opener Anil Sah caught behind for 26. Paras' departure brought two more quick wickets with Ehsan Khan trapping Aarif Sheikh leg-before in his first over and then having Dipendra Singh Airee brilliantly caught at short leg by Shahid Wasif for 12.

The two lowest-placed Associate Members in the 2018 CWCQ, (excluding the Netherlands, who have already qualified for the new 13-team ODI League commencing in 2020), will have to contest the next ICC World Cricket League Division 2 tournament in 2019.

It was Kami who kept the scoreboard ticking before Paudel gave the late lift to kill off the game. Both batsmen hit five boundaries each.

Earlier, Ehsan Khan had helped Hong Kong lend their innings an air of respectability by adding 32 for the ninth wicket with Ehsan Nawaz.

Nizakat Khan top scored with 47 runs off 84 balls with four fours and a maximum.

Lamichhane finished with three for 17 from his 10 overs - fantastic figures that only strengthens his reputation as a future star. Regmi also bowled four maiden overs in his spell. KC returned with 2-35 from 8.2 overs.
