Chiefs expected to sign WR Sammy Watkins to 3-year, $48M deal

Market for Sammy Watkins not expected to be strong

And with the negotiating period officially underway before players are actually allowed to officially sign on Wednesday, it turns out Watkins has agreed to a three-year, $48 million ($30 million guaranteed) with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Watkins joins receiver Tyreek Hill, running back Kareem Hunt and tight end Travis Kelce as potential targets for Mahomes, who spent his rookie season behind Alex Smith on the depth chart.

He finished the 2017 season with 39 catches for 593 yards and eight touchdowns.

The big, physical receiver (6-foot-1, 211 pounds) specializes in stretching defenses vertically. On the Rams, though, that tool mostly benefited the likes of Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Todd Gurley underneath. It remains to be seen how active the Los Angeles Rams will be, but they will undoubtedly sign a handful of outside free agents.

Watkins previously underwent two surgical procedures on his troublesome left foot and also had hip surgery after the 2014 season.

This past season, he caught 44 passes for 703 yards and six touchdowns, ranking ninth in the National Football League with an average of 16 yards per reception.

The Rams acquired Watkins early last August, sending cornerback E.J. Gaines and 2018 second-round pick to the Bills.

The Colts missed out on guard Andrew Norwell and linebacker Anthony Hitchens and while it seems they were in the mix for Watkins, that price tag was likely too high for Ballard.
