Those killed in the encounter were: assistant sub-inspector RKS Tomar, constable Ajay Kumar Yadav, constable Manoranjan Lanka, constable Jitendra Singh, constable Shobhit Sharma, constable Manoj Singh, constable Dharmendra Singh, constable Chandra HS and head constable Lakshman.

Describing the attack as "cowardly", the Chief Minister said naxals hit the CRPF vehicle with an improvised explosive device (IED) because their identity diminished due to development work in the state. The personnel were onboard a mine protection vehicle which was passing through Kistaram, a naxal-dominated part of Sukma district. They have been airlifted to Raipur.

He said, the IED blast in Sukma is deeply distressing.

Reacting to the attack, Union Home MInister Rajnath Singh said, "My heartfelt condolences to the families of those personnel who lost their lives in Sukma blast".

Attacking the Centre, Gandhi said the incident reflected a "deteriorating" internal security situation due to "flawed policies". The CRPF jawans who were targeted by the rebels were from 212 battalion.

Last April, in the biggest Maoist attack on CRPF personnel in Chhattisgarh in the last seven years, 25 jawans were killed and six injured in an ambush in the Burkapal area of Sukma.

The blast occurred when a team of CRPFs 212th battalion was patrolling in a forest in Kistaram area of Sukma, located around 500 kms from here, a paramilitary official told PTI.

12 jawans of the CRPF were killed in the same district in March past year.
