The Republican president agreed on Thursday to accept an invitation from the North Korean leader to meet by May after months of escalating tensions over Pyongyang's advancing nuclear and missile programmes. It has also proposed a "suspension-for-suspension" plan in which the United States, South Korea and Japan freeze military drills in return for North Korea halting its nuclear and missile tests.

In his meeting with the Japanese foreign minister the day before, the South Korean spy chief reportedly agreed to cooperate in resolving the abduction issue and that upcoming summits with the North must yield concrete steps toward denuclearization, the Nikkei Asian Review reported.

The report of the coming May meeting was announced in Seoul, South Korea, with television images of President Trump and Kim Jong Un in similar poses waving to crowds.

Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom, who chairs the council's North Korea sanctions committee, told reporters "we have to continue implementing the sanctions as they stand".

"North Korea has big negotiations to make at the inter-Korean summit and later its summit with the United States and in light of the situation I don't think (North Korea) will use this opportunity to simply buy time", Abe was cited as saying by the Blue House in a statement.

The Korean War of the 1950s ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war and families torn apart on both sides of the military demarcation line that divides the peninsula.

"The offer was made and we'€™ve accepted", she said.

The decision to meet drew support from countries seeking to defuse tensions between North Korea and the USA, along with warnings that Kim may be playing for more time to develop his weapons while seeking relief from US -led worldwide sanctions.

If Kim Jong Un succeeds with inter-Korean summit talks in April and U.S.

Blaney said the United States should collaborate with countries in the region although some are concerned that Moscow could hinder Washington's efforts to reach a nuclear deal with North Korea. "We've not heard anything directly back from North Korea but we expect to hear something directly from them", he said during a visit to Nigeria.

Some experts are concerned that North Korea could be seeking to delay worldwide action while strengthening its nuclear program.

Sherman, who served as special adviser to President Clinton on North Korea, traveled to the country with then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in 2000.

Asked in a Fox News interview due to air on Monday evening whether there was a real possibility of North Korea denuclearizing, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said: "We'll see, as the president often says". Kim will be able to tell his people that America's president is kowtowing to him out of fear of North Korea's nuclear arsenal.
