Chidambaram 2G Scam Case

The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate to complete their investigation of the 2G spectrum allocation cases and other related matters, including the Aircel-Maxis deal, in six months, PTI reported.

The court said the investigation has been going on for a long time and that people of the country can not be kept in dark in such a sensitive matter.

"The issue is serious for this country".

The bench said it was not concerned about the individuals or personalities involved in the case and the Centre should file a status report in two weeks with regard to investigation done so far.

On July 14, 2017, the apex court had constituted the SIT comprising five CBI officers and ordered registration of FIRs and investigation into alleged extra-judicial killings in Manipur. We are unhappy the way things are going on as the investigation has not seen light of the day. "Tell us, how much investigation is pending and why have you not been able to complete the probe yet", the bench said. "This case is becoming like touch me not", the bench said.

Holding that the prosecution had "miserably failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt", a special CBI court in last December had acquitted all 19 accused, including former telecom minister A Raja, DMK Rajya Sabha MP M Kanimozhi, top corporates and bureaucrats of corruption and money laundering charges in the 2G spectrum allocation case. The direction of the Supreme Court has come after Tushar Mehta appointed as the special public prosecutor in all 2G scam related cases.

The court, however, left it to the Centre to change the SPP who would represent the CBI and ED after the trial got over.

On December 21 a year ago, the trial court had acquitted DMK leaders Kanimozhi and A. Raja and 15 other accused in the 2G court for lack of evidence.

In the Aircel-Maxis controversy, one of the 2G scam related case, the focus has been shifted to former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

In the Aircel-Maxis deal, the FIPB approval was supposed to go to the Cabinet Committee of Economic Affairs.
