Here's why Southampton sacked Pellegrino

Pellegrino, who leaves with the third worst Southampton managerial record in the Premier League, appeared to be bracing himself for the sack after last weekend's loss to Newcastle as he admitted he "observed some players who gave up".

The Saints sacked Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday after one win in 17 games left them a point and a place above the Premier League relegation zone. Hovering just one spot above the relegation zone Southampton are in danger of losing the top-flight status they acquired six seasons ago.

Southampton may have to move fast if they wish to appoint Marco Silva as manager.

Assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the south coast club.

Pellegrino, only appointed in the summer, paid the price for Southampton's alarming recent form.

The club said in a statement they want to "appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already under way".

The team, who are now one point outside the relegation zone, have taken on the form of their coach in recent months in that they've become nearly entirely anonymous, with no recognisable approach or identity to speak of.

However, prior to this season Hughes had led the Potters to three consecutive ninth-placed finishes and a 13th-placed finish last term, while he is a vastly experienced manager with only five men having taken charge of more Premier League games.

The former Watford boss is one of the early bookmakers favourites to succeed Mauricio Pellegrino at St Mary's, after the Argentine's sacking on Monday.

Southampton have lost a large number of players to their domestic rivals in the past few years and club chairman Ralph Krueger said earlier in the season that they were keen to end the perception that they were a selling club.
