Musical director James Levine fired by Met Opera for 'sexually abusive' conduct

The Metropolitan Opera in New York City on Monday announced on Monday it fired famed conductor James Levine after the conclusions of an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Levine, who previously served as music director at the Metropolitan Opera for 40 years, was suspended by the Met last December after four men accused him of sexual assault, allegations that stretch back to the late 1960s.

The Met said it has "terminated its relationship" with Levine, who retired in 2016 amid failing health but until the scandal had remained a frequent presence as a conductor. His abusive conduct during his Met tenure has yet to be revealed in print.

Levine had routinely denied the allegations.

The Met said that its investigation, which was led by Robert J. Cleary, a partner at the Proskauer Rose law firm who was previously a US attorney in New Jersey and IL, had determined that "any claims or rumours that members of the Met's management or its board of directors engaged in a cover-up of information relating to these issues are completely unsubstantiated".

Chris Brown said that Levine had abused him in the summer of 1968, when he was a 17-year-old student at the Meadow Brook School of Music in MI and Levine led the school's orchestral institute.

"I thought it was sex for my improvement, sex to make things better", violinist Albin Ifsich, who was a 20-year-old student when he said the abuse took place in 1968, told the newspaper. Met officials said they were launching an investigation.

The Met opened an investigation previous year into James Levine, following reports that he abused a teenage boy decades ago.

Levine has been the most prominent classical musician to date to be called out publicly as a sexual harasser or abuser in the wake of the #metoo movement.
