Russian exile Nikolai Glushkov found dead in his home in London

Counter-terrorism police are leading investigations "as a precaution" although there is no suggestion that Mr Glushkov's death is linked to the poisoning of former spy Sergei Scribal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury.

Metropolitan Police confirmed a man in his 60s was found at a home in Clarence Avenue, New Malden, on Monday and that the cause of his death is unexplained.

The Metropolitan police also said that "the death is now being treated as an unexplained", while "there is no evidence to suggest a link to the incident in Salisbury".

An exiled Russian who was friends with an oligarch that fell out with Vladimir Putin has been found dead in Britain.

Glushkov's death has done nothing to play down fears amid a highly charged political climate with commentators quickly linking it to Salisbury.

Police did not release the man's name saying the man had not been formally identified. "A post-mortem examination will be held in due course", the source added.

Sky News' home affairs correspondent, Mark White, said Mr Glushkov's home in New Malden, southwest London, is being treated as a crime scene. "If there is a change in the status of the investigation, an update will be provided", the Met said.

The victim is believed to be Nikolai Glushkov, who claimed political asylum in the United Kingdom after being convicted of fraud, the BBC reports.

In the 1990s, Glushkov served as deputy managing director at Russia's flag carrier Aeroflot and worked for Berezovsky's LogoVAZ vehicle company.

Glushkov was friends with Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch who died in London in 2013.

Berezovsky was found dead in March 2013 at his ex-wife's home in Berkshire.

Police said he killed himself, but his friends were less certain and a coroner recorded an open verdict.

Andrei Borovkov told Russian media outlets on March 13 that his client, Nikolai Glushkov, has died, but said he was unaware of the time and circumstances. Natasha is believed to live in the UK.

In March last year, he was sentenced to eight years in prison in absentia and issued a one million Russian Ruble fine for allegedly defrauding Aeroflot of $122 million during his tenure as finance director there in the late 1990s.
