Salma Hayek Slams Mattel's Frida Kahlo Barbie Doll

Barbie may struggle with math. But Mattel has had bigger problems with its line of dolls

Certainly one family member took exception to Mattel's depiction of the artist, which eliminated her signature unibrow, a long single eyebrow that one commentator found emblematic of "her striking and attractive refusal to give in to certain sexist societal pressures".

Kahlo's family expressed frustration with the toy last week, too, as the artist's great-niece Mara Romeo blasted Mattel for using her likeness without permission - and for failing to incorporate traits truer to Kahlo's actual look.

And the contract never granted the Corporation rights to Kahlo's image in the first place, only "certain uses of her name", he said.

Mattel said in a statement provided to INSIDER that they obtained the rights through the Frida Kahlo Corporation. "How could they turn her into a Barbie", Hayek wrote, with two thumbs down and a "body image" hashtag.

Mattel released a statement telling fans of Kahlo that they worked with the Panama-based corporation that "owns all the rights", and that they were "actively" participating in its creation.

Many on social media criticised the doll and complained it's more Barbie-like than Frida Kahlo-like.

Featuring renowned figures such as Chloe Kim, Patty Jenkins and Frida Kahlo, the company aims to show girls that they can be anything.

Released just ahead of International Women's Day, the "Inspiring Women" collection includes dolls based on Kahlo, aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, African-American mathematician Katherine Johnson and other historic figures. "We will talk to [Mattel] about regularizing this situation", said her lawyer, Pablo Sangri, according to The Guardian. "It should be a doll that represents everything my aunt represented, her strength", she told AFP. However, the corporation said it got rights through Kahlo's niece, Isolda Pinedo Kahlo, more than a decade ago.

Her instantly recognizable look - unibrow, thick black braids, flowery, hand-embroidered Mexican "tehuana" dresses - and the boldness with which she wore it have turned her into a pop icon.

Critics took to social media about the Kahlo doll, stating that it doesn't exactly reflect Kahlo in image either, expressing that her almost conjoined eyebrows are not accurately portrayed, her figure was not truthful and that the costume worn is not similar in respects to the Tehuana-style dresses the artist wore.

Kahlo (1907-1954), the wife of the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, is considered one of the great painters of the 20th century for her searingly intimate portraits, often dealing with her own pain and isolation.
