Sen. Jeff Flake Threatens Bill to Nullify President Trump's Tariffs

"I disagree with this action and fear its unintended consequences", House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

Fast-forward to earlier this month, when Trump hastily announced he would be placing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, a proposal deemed sacrilegious by traditional Republican orthodoxy and sure to win him few allies.

Ryan was joined by Jeff Flake, the Republican from Arizona, who described the tariffs as "lethal poisons".

Members of the Republican Party have openly discussed moving to block the proposed tariffs through the introduction of legislation created to nullify any changes, but securing the votes to do so could now be even harder due to the unexpected support on the issue for President Trump from across the aisle.

The state's most prominent Democrat, U.S. Sen. That "nullification crisis" was brought to an end by President Andrew Jackson's declaration of the supremacy of federal law, cementing his place as a hero to American nationalists.

Trump set the tariffs based on a Commerce Department investigation that found imports of the metals pose a risk to national security.

Senator Pat Roberts, the Kansas Republican, described the tariffs as a "tax on consumers" in a statement Thursday night.

It recommends that Congress try to wrest back that authority by passing Senator Mike Lee's Global Trade Accountability Act.

"As a Republican who believes in free trade, limited government, economic freedom, I couldn't be re-elected in my party right now", Flake said.

One of the GOP's major donors, Charles Koch, wrote in The Post: "The administration's recent decision to impose major steel and aluminum tariffs - on top of higher tariffs on washing machines and solar panels - will have the same harmful effect".

The congressmen are honest in their opposition to Trump's tariffs, and they're right.

"We just want fairness", he added.

The White House says Mexico, Canada and other countries may be spared from President Donald Trump's planned steel and aluminum tariffs under national security "carve-outs", a move that could soften the blow amid threats of retaliation by trading partners and dire economic warnings from lawmakers and business groups. "We have to protect & build our Steel and Aluminum Industries while at the same time showing great flexibility and cooperation toward those that are real friends and treat us fairly on both trade and the military".

That would-be challenger could be Mr. Flake, perhaps the party's staunchest Trump critic, who has declined to run for reelection in 2018.

All of the heartburn was created by Trump's radical and hasty trade announcement.
