Tiger Woods, Ernie Els reportedly will captain 2019 Presidents Cup

Report Tiger Woods Ernie Els to be named 2019 Presidents Cup captains

And barring any format changes, the only drama next December will be whether Woods becomes the first playing captain since Hale Irwin in 1994.

An official announcement is expected on Tuesday.

Woods is at $11 to win at Augusta next month, alongside Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy, with the quartet trailing only Dustin Johnson who is the $8 favourite.

Captains alone will not change the outcome, a position that former global captains Greg Norman and Nick Price have expressed.

Among numerous battles between Woods and Els was their famous duel at the 2003 Presidents Cup in South Africa.

Whilst Els might be a logical choice to be the next global team captain, Woods' anticipated appointment comes as more of a surprise, not least because he will be only 43 by the time the match takes place in Melbourne next year.

"I still believe that 28 points will be a better competition, like the Ryder Cup: four games on every match", said South African Louis Oosthuizen, who has played in the past three Presidents Cup matches.

Last year's loss in NY prompted Els to call for changes to the event ahead of the 2019 edition, including an overhaul of "logistics, scheduling, selection process (and) course set-up". In near darkness, the two were tied after three playoff holes and captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed to a draw.

He was an assistant to Steve Stricker in the Presidents Cup previous year, and he already has agreed to be a vice captain at the Ryder Cup this fall in France for the second straight time. Els has been runner-up to Woods seven times, more than any other player. The US has won ten, with the global team winning just once.

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance. Compared to the stacked American squads, the back-end of the worldwide lineup will continue to be a liability. Will he be a playing captain?
