Trudeau considering more action to keep foreign dumped steel out of Canada

President Donald Trump spoke on Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the steel and aluminum import tariffs Trump announced last week, the White House said.

Mr. Trudeau argued that Canada - the largest supply list of steel to the United States - is a key American defence ally and noted Canadian steel is used to manufacture US tanks and Canadian aluminum is in America warplanes.

The prime minister adds he is still working hard to gain a permanent exemption to these tariffs and has made it clear the U.S. argument of national security makes no sense.

Brazil has said it will seek exemption from the newly imposed tariffs.

His Foreign Minister, Chrystia Freeland, will be in Washington on Tuesday and Thursday to "advance Canada's efforts to keep trade open, fair and barrier-free, to benefit people on both sides of the border", her ministry said in a statement.

Reacting to Trump's urge, Trudeau told CNN that Canada is glad to see the USA is eager to seal the deal.

Donnelly also said the Canadian government must put resources in place to ensure that cheap steel is not diverted into Canada after Trump last week chose to impose a 25 percent tariffs on steel imports.

Trudeau is also brushing off the idea that Canada might be bullied into a deal.

Canadian steel facilities can't compete fairly against countries that choose "to sell at a loss in order to control the market", he said. "Our steel, our aluminium is in their tanks and ships and planes".

NAFTA talks might now enter an intense phase: "President Trump emphasized the importance of quickly concluding the ongoing NAFTA negotiations", said a readout from the White House on Monday's call with Trudeau.

Other stops will include Hamilton, Sault Ste.

He said the government needs to monitor steel imports more closely so that if shipment volumes are rising, it can react quickly to stop Canada from becoming a dumping ground into the US market. Canada produces some of the cleanest steel and aluminum in the world thanks to our focus on new technology and cleaner sources of energy.

Canada is the United States' largest foreign provider of steel and aluminum with about 85 per cent of Canadian exports being directed to the country.

Marie and Regina, was held after United States President Donald Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with tariffs on steel and aluminum.
