Case Keenum reportedly plans to sign with the Broncos

ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to break the news late Monday night. Kubiak coached Keenum for two seasons (2013-2014) when Kubiak was the Texans head coach.

The departure of Keenum leaves the Vikings in the middle of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes with the Jets and Cardinals also battling for his services. We didn't play very well there a year ago, and that's not all on the players.

Keenum, a backup when last season began, guided Minnesota to the NFC North title and then into the conference championship game.

He also threw a touchdown on the last play of the game to Stefon Diggs to stun the New Orleans Saints in the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Broncos went just 5-11 last season and will pick fifth in the upcoming NFL Draft, but they already have a solid defense in place and a number of weapons on offense, including wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders.

The news is expected to be confirmed later on Tuesday and rubber stamped when Free Agency opens at 9pm (GMT) on Wednesday.

The Broncos haven't made the playoffs since their Super Bowl win to close out the 2015 season; their inconsistent play on both the offensive line and at quarterback have been big reasons why they've sat out the postseason.

"I still think we're not too far away, " Elway said. "Obviously, we have to get better at that (quarterback) position". There were some things that we should have done differently that we didn't do. I feel like we can get right back in the thick of the things rather quickly.

Denver chose to bypass incumbents Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch and go for Keenum, who can't sign until Wednesday.

Six years ago, Elway landed Peyton Manning, the biggest free agent prize in National Football League history, following his release by the Colts and a series of neck fusion surgeries.
