Scott Mc Kenna has earned his first Scotland call-up

Speaking at Hampden Park after announcing his squad, he said: "They are definitely prepared".

Gemmill will have to do without both players for the forthcoming European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Andorra but is confident they are up to making the next step in global football.

"Scott McKenna came in against Holland in our first game and I think I'm right in saying his club manager took note of his level of performance and brought him into his team".

"To keep having them coming through is just an unbelievable achievement".

McLeish said of the new faces in the squad: "It's a great opportunity and they've been doing well with their clubs, that's why you get picked for your country, ultimately".

The 21-year-old, who has recently chosen to play for Scotland over England, was placed alongside Matic in a midfield pivot after Paul Pogba suffered an injury on the eve of the game.

"It's early days, he has a long way to go to get to the other end of the scale where I'm at but he has given himself the best possible chance to do it".

"It is a real motivation for all the players to continue their progression".

Gemmill has also lost assistant manager Peter Grant to the senior set-up and the former Norwich City manager has been replaced with former Scotland assistant Peter Houston.

Undoubtedly in the form of his life, Snodgrass may be one of a few experienced heads to help compliment the squad of Scottish youngsters as the nation attempts to go again and qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1998.

"It is great for that link and the knowledge within the senior staff of what is available to them".

Gemmill said: "The squad is always evolving".

"Sometimes you don't really know what you have until you are tested and Scott has had a similar ride to Marcus [Rashford] in the sense that he probably wasn't very close to the first team but got his chance and took it and he has been pretty much an ever-present since then".
