It's been one month since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where 17 students and teachers were killed.

The nationally organized walkouts, most of which will last 17 minutes in symbolic tribute to the Florida victims, are unprecedented in recent American history.

"I don't see our kids walking out as much I do foresee them sitting in", Holt said.

The rise in student activism comes after the recent high school shooting in Parkland, Florida. "We were thinking about this for you when you were five years old - and we took you out of school so that you could say you did'".

A large crowd of students gathered and chanted slogans outside the gates of the White House. The walkout, she said, is a message that political leaders need to hear.

The walkouts have drawn support from companies including media conglomerate Viacom, which said it will pause programming on MTV, BET and all its other networks for 17 minutes during the walkouts, and allow students to temporarily take over MTV's social media accounts.

The movement - called #Enough - is calling for a ban on assault-style weapons and the expansion of background checks. Mass shootings have plagued the USA for decades, and congress remains stagnant on the issue; it makes sense that the youth is beginning to take initiative. More than 3,000 are listed.

President Donald Trump and lawmakers are noting the role that students are playing in shaping the discussion on guns.

Some of the money will be allocated to hire and train more school resource officers and mental health counselors and install extra safety equipment, like security cameras, metal detectors, bulletproof glass and automatic locking devices.

(Harrison, Oh.) - At least one local high school's students plan to walk out of class to protest violence in schools Wednesday. "You didn't let up and you fought until there was change".

Students from Boston, Worcester, Springfield and Holyoke are expected to rally for an hour outside the Springfield headquarters of Smith & Wesson to demand a meeting with the gun manufacturer's chief executive to discuss how the manufacturer can "help reduce gun violence". More than 175 universities have come out saying that if high school students do get in trouble for protesting peacefully, it will not count against them in the admissions process. "This is where we spend the majority of our time and pray that we are safe every day". According to the organization Empower, which is the main national voice encouraging students to protest, more than 2,500 walkouts are planned across the country.

At Lawrenceburg High School, students are not being permitted to participate in a walkout. The walkout is also meant to draw attention to efforts by students in Florida and other states to effect change in gun laws in hopes of stemming gun violence.

At Tuscola, Principal Travis Collins said he has worked with various student organizations to provide a forum Wednesday where students can speak out in a peaceful and orderly fashion. She wasn't sure yet if she, or other students, would also leave their classes - and, in her case, a Latin mid-term - to gather outside briefly.

In this rural and conservative part of Nebraska, she said, gun control is controversial. "Plenty of ranchers I know use AR-15s because it's a very customizable gun", she said. The email also included vague and ominous threats of punishment if students proceed to walk at the previously scheduled time, which could range anywhere from suspension to detention.

Not all protests Wednesday are expected to involve students.

But she hopes many other students will join her. "Gun violence needs to be stopped in this country".
