Participating students will leave their desks empty for 17 minutes to represent the 17 people who were fatally shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The 7,000 shoes in the "Monument for our Kids" installment represent every child that was killed by gunfire since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, according to Avaaz. Avaaz, an worldwide advocacy group, planned the demonstration to honor victims killed since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

Pairs of shoes are laid out on the lawn outside of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, March 13, 2018. "The protesters held up a sign that read "#NotOneMore".

The shoes will be donated when the monument is dismantled.

The shoes are from family members of victims, as well as celebrities, and others from across the country.

CBS affiliate WUSA reports that the group based the protest on research from the American Academy of Pediatrics that found approximately 1,300 children are killed by guns each year, or about three every day. "Culture is changing in America right now". More than 2,500 walkouts are scheduled across the country, according to the organizer's website. A few have threatened to suspend students if they disrupt class by leaving.

The silent protest is meant to spur lawmakers to take action on gun reforms.

Calling for the shooting to be a tipping point for gun legislation, George and Amal Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and companies such as Gucci have donated as much as $500,000 to support the March For Our Lives effort, which is being organized by the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety. The symbolic shoe demonstrations likely draw inspiration from the renowned memorial at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest that honors lives lost during the Holocaust.
