On-line grocery delivery is growing in popularity. This week King Soopers and Walmart announced plans to expand their delivery systems

In a statement, theBentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant claimed that the expansion of its same-day home delivery service from six markets to 100 metropolitan areas will enable it to serve more than 40 percent of USA households. Select alcohol is also available for delivery to customers. The decision will also create damaging competition to Kroger (NYSE: KR) and other companies which focus nearly exclusively on the grocery business.

Ward said the home-delivery service has brought in new customers in the six cities where it's now offered, which include Dallas and San Jose, California.

Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods Market past year has raised the stakes in the highly competitive grocery delivery wars. Walmart plans to use about 800 stores to operate the service. Whole Foods also now offers delivery through Instacart, which ships groceries for Kroger, Acme and Costco, too.Target late previous year bought online grocery delivery startup Shipt for $550 million, adding to the competition. The company said no subscription is required.

That has USA grocers racing to meet demand, Chris Medenwald, a marketing manager at Field Agent, said in a report. The Germany-based grocer announced last summer it is working with Instacart to conduct delivery tests in Dallas, Los Angeles and Atlanta. For example, when I recently tried to change a pickup order to a delivery, Walmart simply couldn't handle making the switch. Customers can pick up their groceries without having to get out of their auto.

He also said Tuesday that the company now employs more than 18,000 personal shoppers with additional hires planned as both grocery pickup and delivery services are rolled out to a larger audience this year. He did not specify which companies will be involved in the expansion and said Walmart will "continue to understand how that is going to look over the next 12 months".

Walmart's home grocery delivery service will expand from six cities now. "We're serving our customers in ways that no one else can".
