Chief Confirms £70m-Rated Midfielder Could Join Man Utd This Summer

"Manchester City have cooled their interest in Fred, which could pave the way for rivals Manchester United to sign the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder", Ducker writes.

The 25-year-old's impressive form has led to interest from the Premier League as United and City have both been strongly linked with the midfielder in recent months.

In a further boost, Fred himself has hinted that he hasn't made up his mind over which Premier League club to join but named United as one of the teams he'd like to play for next season. "If he asked us to stay another year, we'd let him".

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is desperate to add a midfielder to his squad in the summer with Michael Carrick retiring and the future of Marouane Fellaini up in the air. Julian Weigl has been scouted intensely by Manchester City and he now looks like the more favourable option.

The Premier League leaders are refusing to give up in their efforts to get an agreement pushed through, but they are set to face competition from a familiar foe. But, the fact that he will be 33 by the time the season ends means it is imperative for the Citizens to sign a potential successor.

The news comes as a surprise after City had reportedly been in advanced negotiations to land the 24-year-old Brazil global, but Paul Hirst of The Times writes that the two clubs could not come to an agreement despite City loaning striker Larry Kayode to the Ukrainian giants.

The two Manchester clubs could find themselves in another tug of war over Fred, and United's more pressing need for a midfielder and willingness to spend may seem them come out on top, but anything could happen.

"Fred will leave in July", Palkin confirmed, as quoted by FourFourTwo.

'Shakhtar Donetsk's best player is Fred in the centre of midfield, ' he said in January. "In addition to being very good, Fred is very professional". The report suggests that the player will cost around the £70 million mark, an amount that is unlikely to deter either club.
