World Happiness Report 2018

The researchers then analysed the perceived happiness levels in each country alongside data on six categories - GDP per capita, social support, healthy life, expectancy, social freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption - to look for potential reasons why people in certain areas may be happier than others.

The annual reportexternal link for the year 2018 was published on Wednesday in the Vatican, by the UN's Sustainable Development Solutions Network.

The United States, 14th past year, is now 18th, while the United Kingdom is in 19th, the same spot it occupied in 2017.

This cuts both ways: A person who moves to a country high on the happiness list will probably become happier, and a person who moves to a lower-ranked country will probably become less happy.

People in Burundi are unhappiest with their lives, according to the survey of 156 countries, followed by Central African Republic (155), South Sudan (154), Tanzania (153) and Yemen (152).

The "Palestinian Territories" came in 104th place, Lebanon in 88th, Jordan in 90th and Syria in 150th in the listing of 156 countries.

In addition to its joyful locals, Finland is also home to the happiest immigrants, the study found.

Israel has not fallen below 14th in the history of the report, which first came out in 2012.

Meik Wiking, CEO of the Denmark-based Happiness Research Institute, said the five Nordic nations reliably rank high in the index because they "are doing something right in terms of creating good conditions for good lives". "These countries share a very similar level of GDP per capita, but Finland converts its wealth into wellbeing in a much better way than the United Kingdom", he said.

The Report ends on a different tack, with a focus on three emerging health problems that threaten happiness: obesity, the opioid crisis, and depression. Jeffrey Sachs of New York's Columbia University said "We obviously have a social crisis in the USA: more inequality, less trust, less confidence in government".

"The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born", said John Helliwell, co-editor of the report and a professor at the University of British Columbia.

Speaking on the report, Prof.

Wiking from the Happiness Research Institute said the United States had also seen declining "trust, generosity and social support, and those are some of the factors that explain why some countries are happier than others".

In fact, he noted, the 10 countries that scored highest in overall happiness also had the happiest immigrants. A fifth Nordic country, Sweden, was ranked as the 9th happiest country.
