He has dropped just four sets this year.

Roger Federer registered his best ever start to a season by booking his berth in the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California on Saturday. The American was up a break and serving for the first set at 5-4, but he missed a backhand volley and Raonic won three straight games to close out the set.

Defending champion Federer preserved his flawless record in 2018 but the 20-time grand slam victor was far from ideal in his hard-fought 5-7 6-4 6-4 victory, which got underway on Saturday morning. "I was down one break, and I'm just trying to stay calm and I'm just trying to learn from Roger", the Korean told the ATP's official website.

Del Potro, the world No 8, is bidding for his second successive tournament win, having won in Acapulco, Mexico, in March, beating three fellow top 10 players in his run to the title. I am happy with that. "We played great tennis today", Del Potro said.

Del Potro's one-sided win lacked the drama of the earlier match as Canadian Raonic put up little fight against the Argentine's powerful serve and punishing forehand in a contest that lasted just over an hour. "It's an honor for me to play a final against him".

Prediction: Federer is brimming with confidence.

Federer wins his sixth career Indian Wells title. And it showed as he sprayed errors all over the court and didn't break Coric for the first time until late in the second set. "I started off really well, struggled afterwards, found my game back again and was able to protect it, saving big break points early on in the second set", Federer said. Federer is the defending champion there, too."I feel frustrated, you know, that I let an opportunity like this go by".

Del Potro was competing in his first Indian Wells final since 2013, when he lost to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

The Swiss, who won the Australian Open in January to move to 20 Grand Slam crowns in total, edged past Berna Coric in three sets to progress to yet another final. I played, I think, two good points.

Although Coric's resolve remained and he broke again to lead 4-3, a double-fault allowed Federer to promptly level matters.

"It became a bit of a cat-and-mouse game", Federer said of the match. I think this is the worst part for me.

"I broke his serve quick in both sets and that gave me control of the match", he said.

Needing to hold serve to win the first Masters 1000 event of the year Federer blew it with Del Potro carving out a couple of break points before levelling the match at 5-5.

Anderson was ragged thereafter and Coric pumped his fist in triumph after the seventh seed sent a forehand long to hand the Croatian the biggest win of his career.
