Palestinian teen in'slap video reaches plea deal

A Palestinian teenager who gained worldwide attention after a video showed her slapping and kicking an Israeli soldier has agreed to plead guilty to assault charges and will serve eight months in prison.

The deal was made during a closed-door hearing but must still be approved by the military court, she added.

On Dec 15, a few hours after a cousin of Tamimi's was shot in the face with a rubber bullet during a clash between villagers of Nabi Saleh and Israeli forces, Tamimi erupted at a pair of heavily armed soldiers as they took up a position in the front yard of her home. She pleaded guilty to four charges, including assault of a soldier, reduced from an earlier charge of aggravated assault.

Lasky said the judge must also rule on a similar plea deal for Tamimi's mother Nariman, who has been charged with incitement.

Elor Azaria, the Israeli soldier who shot dead a disarmed and injured Palestinian attacker in the West Bank city of Hebron on March 24, 2016, is surrounded by family and friends as he awaits to hear his sentence in a courtroom at the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv, on February 21, 2017.

Tamimi's sentence includes time served and a fine of 5,000 shekels ($1,430, 1,166 euros), meaning she is to be released in the summer.

Ahed Tamimi was sentenced to eight months in prison for slapping a soldier. Ahed and her mother manager to pull the soldier of her brother and free him. The Israeli military confirmed the details of the deal. The video evoked polarized reactions, with much of the Israeli camp expressing outrage that she and her cousin were not arrested on the spot, and much of the Palestinian camp cheering her aggressive resistance of what they view as Israeli occupation.

In Israel, many have praised the restraint of the two soldiers and accused her family of using their daughter as a pawn in filmed provocations. The three months she has spent in a military prison since being arrested in a late night December raid on her home count towards the eight-month sentence.

The women of the Tamimi family, who dared to resist occupying soldiers in their yard by fists and words alone, will sit in jail for longer than Shomer, longer than the soldiers who killed Samir Awad, and only a slighty less than Elor Azaria.

Worldwide bodies must work to protect Palestinian children and pressure the occupation to stop release the 350 minors it is now holding.

Elor Azaria, the Israeli soldier who executed a wounded Palestinian, will serve 9 months in jail. "It broke the stereotyped image of the Palestinian in the worldwide community", Tamimi's father, Bassem Tamimi, told Reuters.

Ahed Tamimi's supporters see a courageous girl who struck the soldiers in anger after having just learned that Israeli troops seriously wounded a 15-year-old cousin, shooting him in the head from close range with a rubber bullet during nearby stone-throwing clashes.
