Around this time a year ago, news broke that Robert Downey Jr. would be starring in Universal's adaptation of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle series, which is being directed by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan from a script he wrote, based on an earlier draft by Tom Shepherd.

Robert Downey Jr., who is playing the title role in the upcoming movie The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, will be in very good company. Antonio Banderas is on board as a pirate named Rassouli, Michael Sheen will be playing a character called Mudfly, and we knew Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Emma Thompson, and Ralph Fiennes were providing voices for members of the animal kingdom.

Though we've heard some of the featured names mentioned already, Downey Jr. took to Twitter today to announce the full cast. and it boasts enough talent to fill 100 Hulkbusters.

The newly announced stars include Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, John Cena, Rami Malek, Craig Robinson, Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour and Carmen Ejogo.

Stephen Gaghan is directing the film from his own screenplay, while Hollywood moguls Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum are producing alongside Downey, Jr's wife Susan.

The project is based on the 1920s tales by Lofting, following a peculiar doctor who can speak with animals, shunning human patients in favour of the critters. Rex Harrison also portrayed Doctor Dolittle in a classic 1967 movie, co-starring Anthony Newley, Richard Attenborough, and Samantha Eggar. Eddie Murphy played a more contemporary version of Doctor Dolittle in 1998 and again in Doctor Dolittle 2 in 2001.

Downey Jr. will be "talking to the animals" when The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle hits cinemas sometime in 2019.
