It was confirmed, Bancroft had a piece of sandpaper in his pocket during the afternoon of the third day of the Test in Cape Town on Saturday.

The other Aussies accused of ball tampering against South Africa in a Test - Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft have been banned for one year and nine months respectively by the board in addition to being banned from the leadership board for the same duration. To understand in laymen's language, they are still allowed to participate in any tournament not affiliated with Cricket Australia.

It has also been revealed that Cameron Bancroft falsely claimed that he used sticky tape in ball tampering.

Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have been called up as replacements by Australia and Tim Paine, who took over from Smith as captain mid-match in Cape Town, was officially named captain of the Test team on Tuesday.

Cricket Australia's investigation team comprising of head of integrity Iain Roy and head of team performance Pat Howard arrive in South Africa to conduct the interview.

"These are significant penalties for professional players and the Cricket Australia Board does not impose them lightly", Cricket Australia chairman David Peever said in a statement.

Cricket Australia has handed skipper Smith and vice-captain Warner 12-month suspensions from worldwide and domestic cricket following an investigation. "It is hoped that following a period of suspension, the players will be able to return to playing the game they love and eventually rebuild their careers".

Sutherland also refused to make comment on Smith's long-term position as captain on Sunday, a position Smith, while embarrassed and regretful, had said he would not resign from.

CA CEO James Sutherland added that details of an independent review into the conduct and culture of the men's cricket team will also be shared in "due course".

Dropped during Australia's home series Ashes loss to England, Smith was recalled to the Test team in 2013.

Australian cricket great Shane Warne said he was "shocked" by the incident but questioned the severity of the punishment.

The evidence from the TV cameras was overwhelming and Smith and Bancroft came out after play to confess to their roles in the plot to reporters.

"But the jump to hysteria is something that has elevated the offence beyond what they actually did, and maybe we're at a point where the punishment just might not fit the crime". South Africa's lead was over 100 runs with just one wicket down, and the ball wasn't doing much to help Australia.

The pair have been banned for a year each.

However, the damage done to sports-mad Australia's esteem is arguably far greater, with everybody from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull down piling in to express their outrage. Earlier today, Warner had stepped down as the captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad in the aftermath of the massive ball-tampering scandal. "Secretary Mr Amitabh Choudhary, has chose to ban Mr Smith and Mr Warner with immediate effect from participation in IPL 2018".
