Royals Prepare For Opening Day Without Star Salvador Perez

Kansas City Royals' catcher Salvador Perez will have to start the 2018 campaign on the sideline.

Perez suffered the injury carrying a suitcase up a set of stairs at his home Tuesday night.

Royals manager Ned Yost disclosed the injury Wednesday when announcing his lineup for Opening Day on Thursday afternoon against the Chicago White Sox. The five-time All-Star heard a "pop" and immediately called Royals trainer Nick Kenney, who advised Perez to ice the knee and come in for an MRI exam on Wednesday.

It is a Grade 2 MCL tear and he is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Perez, 27, has been in the organization since he was 16, signing with the Royals for $65,000.

In 2012, Perez signed a five-year extension and just prior to the 2016 regular season, inked another five-year pact that would keep him in the fray through 2021.

The 27-year-old hit 27 home runs and added 80 RBI while having a slash line of.268/.297/.495 in 2017.

"I don't want to play first base", he said emphatically.

Butera hit.227 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 75 games last season, his third with the Royals, while Gallagher hit.250 with a homer and five RBIs in 13 games as a late-season call-up.
