Britain had no choice but to conduct air strikes, Theresa May says

US Defense Secretary, James Mattis, said the strikes were a "one-time shot" to send a clear message to President Bashar al-Assad and his "murderous lieutenants".

Mentioning that chemical weapons had been used too often in recent times, May stressed that none of the opposition forces used helicopters or barrel bombs and that Islamic State did not operate in the region.

Theresa May will address Parliament on Monday.

"I want to state categorically ... that Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon", she said, the Guardian reported.

"I believe it should also be a message to others that the worldwide community is not going to stand by and allow chemical weapons to be used with impunity." she asserted.

The Prime Minister explained: "I have taken this decision because I believe it is the right thing to do".

She said: "No other group but Syria's military could have carried out the chemical attack".

May said "a significant body of information including intelligence" pointed to Syrian government responsibility for a suspected chemical attack last Saturday.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed her support for US, French and British airstrikes, claiming they were "necessary and appropriate" to deter the use of chemical weapons in future.

Putin's foreign ministry has branded the attacks a "tremendous blow to the negotiation process".

For his part, the leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Gerard Batten, opposed the British military action in Syria.

Konashenkov said that Russian Federation knew "for sure" that between April 3-6, the White Helmets - a group which helps civilians in opposition-held territory in Syria - were "under severe pressure specifically from London to produce as quickly as possible this pre-planned provocation".

British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force.

Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had said Britain should press for an independent United Nations -led investigation into the suspected chemical attack in Douma rather than wait for instructions from Trump on how to proceed. The barbaric and intolerable use of chemical weapons should never go unchecked.

"We have. evidence that proves Britain was directly involved in organising this provocation", defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.

At this time, my thoughts are with our fearless British servicemen and women - and our French and American partners - who are carrying out their duty with the greatest professionalism.
