Sea Of Thieves Promises Six Free Content Updates This Year

Details on these are scarcer, but there'll be a new ship, and a brand new part of the world to sail. I think Rare is on the right track with its plans, which also include "three more major updates" during fall and winter.

The Sea of Thieves content roadmap was revealed today and, starting in May, players will be getting new weekly events that feature new AI dangers, rewards, and gameplay mechanics to regularly freshen up the seafaring adventure.

"We've been listening closely to our community, and we know how keen they are to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves", said Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate.

The studio discusses its content plans in depth in the developer video below. The initial launch will be a timed event, but once the new threat is added to the world it will be a permanent fixture.

From the sounds of it, weekly events seem like Rare is going to be both adding new things to the game and building upon what they've already got in the core game.

"The Hungering Deep brings a new AI threat to the world that crews will have to work together to discover and defeat as part of a unique event", reads Neate's blog post. The only hint given is that it will introduce new rewards and new mechanics.

This summer will see the debut of Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a new perilous part of the world to explore.

For the rest of April the company says its focus is to keep addressing feedback from players, but that's expected to change next month as their focus moves to new content.

Rare is also deprioritizing the development of some previously announced features: pets, which will let players own parrots, cats and monkeys; and ship captaincy, a system that would allow legendary pirates to become captains of customizable ships. The water looks incredible, sailing is fun, but outside of those two things many have found the game to be lacking. "Expect our plans to continue to be fluid but always with the goals listed above as our guiding principles", the update read.
