USA air strike against Syria risky but necessary

Opposition activists, rescue workers and medics say dozens of people died in a suspected chemical attack on the rebel-held town of Douma on Saturday.

But the president also made clear that the USA actions has limits and that the US commitment to acting in the Middle East won't last forever.

Trump blamed Iran and Russian Federation for their support of the Assad regime, saying Moscow has failed to live up to its guarantee to make sure the Syrian government got rid of its chemical weapons. Trump added that he never specified any particular time of a United States attack. Before reports of the latest chemical attack, Trump said the American military would be withdrawing from Syria "very soon", once the defeat of Islamic State militants was secured.

Britain and France have joined the USA in the military operation, Trump said. Last weekend, he condemned the chemical attack in a tweet and warned there would be a "big price to pay".

"It's necessary to avoid any steps that may fuel tensions in Syria", said Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump told the nation from the White House that the U.S. would join allies Britain and France in launching missile strikes in retaliation for the "evil and despicable" gassing of Syrian civilians.

Referring to Assad, Trump said, "These are not the actions of a man, they are crimes of a monster instead".

"The nations of the world can be judged by the friends they keep", the president said. He has advocated for a more assertive American posture in the region to counter Iran's influence.

The U.S. president had sharply critical words for both Russian Federation and Iran, which have backed Assad's government.

"I believe there was a chemical attack and we are looking for the actual evidence", he said, indicating that a decision is yet to be made.

Depending on the strength of the strikes, Bashar al-Assad's regime could be deterred from resorting to chemical weapons in the future.

U.S. President Donald Trump makes a statement about Syria at the White House in Washington, U.S., April 13, 2018.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Russia Friday that "there is no military solution to the conflict". About 2,000 US military personnel are in Syria. This has raised fears of a possible direct clash of USA and Russian forces.

Apparently, he failed to run it by the White House National Security team, staffers and USA allies, because the White House later issued a statement explaining that a final decision had not yet been made regarding Syria.

In typical fashion, Donald Trump is flip-flopping on his decision to authorize strikes on Syria after tweeting that he might carry the action. It's an endeavor that is projected to cost at least $100 billion and take at least 10 years to complete.
