Airstrike in Syria was the only alternative says British PM May
May said the aim was to deter the Syrian regime authorities from further use of chemical weapons and to send a message to the wider world that it was unacceptable to use such weapons.
"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace, "Britain should be playing a leadership role to bring about a ceasefire in the conflict, not taking instructions from Washington and putting British military personnel in harm's way", he said in his statement".
Other opposition leaders joined in the criticism.
Corbyn later wrote to May seeking assurance that there would be no further bombing raids and urged the government to negotiate a pause in the Syrian civil war.
"The government should do whatever possible to push Russian Federation and the United States to agree to an independent UN-led investigation of last weekend's horrific chemical weapons attack so that those responsible can be held to account".
May said she would address parliament on Monday about the strikes.
After hearing legal, security and defence advice, she concluded it was "right and legal" to take military action.
"This is the first time as prime minister that I have had to take the decision to commit our armed forces in combat - and it is not a decision I have taken lightly".
Asked whether he would back a vote at the end of Monday's debate, opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn told the BBC: "Yes I would, because I think parliament should have a say in this and the prime minister could quite easily have done that".
He also did not rule out future military action.

Mr Trump said the military action was a "combined operation" with the armed forces of the United Kingdom and France.
Lawmakers backed action in Iraq in 2014, and again in Syria in 2015, strictly limiting strikes in both countries to targets of the Islamic State jihadist group.
"This legally questionable action risks escalating further, as U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis has admitted, an already devastating conflict and, therefore, makes real accountability for war crimes and use of chemical weapons less, not more likely".
U.S., French and British missile attacks struck at the heart of Syria's chemical weapons program Saturday in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack a week ago, although the restrained assault appeared unlikely to halt Syrian President Bashar Assad's progress in the seven-year-old civil war. The strikes at 0100 GMT were 15 miles (24 kilometres) west of Homs.
British Prime Minister Theresa May said Saturday that the United Kingdom is clear that the Assad regime is responsible for Douma chemical attack and confirmed United Kingdom hit a specific and limited set of targets in Syria.
Vince Cable, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "Riding the coattails of an erratic USA president is no substitute for a mandate from the House of Commons".
The centre-right Conservatives rely on the support of the Democratic Unionist Party, Northern Ireland's biggest party, for a majority in parliament.
"It is about a limited and targeted strike that does not further escalate tensions in the region and that does everything possible to prevent civilian casualties", she said.
Nigel Dodds, the DUP's leader in parliament, said May had the full authority required to carry out the strikes.
"This collective action sends a clear message that the worldwide community will not stand by and tolerate the use of chemical weapons", May said at a press conference, calling the military action "right and legal".
