Wireless Android Auto is live for Google Pixel and Nexus phones

While Apple has offered wireless connectivity for CarPlay in certain vehicles for months now, Android Auto required that in order to use it, your phone had to be physically connected to the vehicle via USB. Now, Google has finally added support for a select number of its handsets.

If you've got a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P phone, everything should happen wireless and automatically once you power up your vehicle, as per a message from Google.

As Google notes, you won't even need to take the phone out of your pocket or bag; the device will connect automatically over Wi-Fi once it's set up.

Remember, you'll still need a USB cable to establish the initial Android Auto connection.

Google also said the wireless connectivity is now limited to the newer head units manufactured by JVC and Kenwood, though the company expects other head unit makers to roll out supported products later this year. After that, the wireless mode should work.

Google announced Android Auto wireless support for Pixel and Nexus devices is now enabled. Google is apparently working with phone manufacturers on making the software work with their individual wrappers, but who knows when that will actually roll out to the public.

Google no doubt has more plans up its sleeve for this product, and we'll be watching Google I/O closely to see what develops.
