Apple will repair some Apple Watch 2 models that have swollen batteries or won't power on for free

Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers are now servicing Apple Watch Series 2 models with swollen batteries or that won't power on.

Apple specified in the memo that units unable to power on, or experiencing hardware defects, as a result of battery swelling are eligible for the free fix. Only 42mm-sized Apple Watch Series 2 models are eligible for free repairs which include the Sport, Edition, Hermes, and Nike+ variants.

"Apple has determined that under certain conditions, some Series 2 devices may not power on or they may experience an expanded battery", wrote the firm.

When it comes to battery-related issues, Apple is certainly no stranger.

Apple will authorize coverage for eligible devices for three years after the original date of purchase.

The first-generation Apple Watch (Series o) seemingly suffered from the same problem, with Apple implementing a similar 3-year fix program for affected users. The watches are sent off site to be repaired so you may be without your device for some time before having it returned. The repairs must be scheduled through the Genius Bar and it is recommended that customers ensure that it will be a free fix prior to agreeing to service. Naturally, the device must be inspected by Apple employees to confirm what is causing the issue.
