Team England women's rugby sevens secured the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast in Australia after they beat Canada 24-19.

Fiji, who won last week's Hong Kong sevens, were bidding for their first Commonwealth gold after taking silver behind New Zealand in the inaugural sevens in 1998 and again in 2002.

England had not even been expected to reach the final on the Gold Coast, but did so with another incredible finish in their semi-final with Jamaica as they came from behind to win by one point in the last second.

Australia had won every game of the tournament by at least 21 points prior to the final and went into the match as hot favourites to top the podium, but England matched them from the off and went into half time level at 25-25.

On Friday, Crossley became the first woman to score a try in Commonwealth Games rugby sevens as Canada blanked South Africa 29-0.

It was Brazier's runaway try near the end of first extra period that broke the deadlock.

That would be as close as they got, though, setting up a blockbuster finale.

Tonegato scored a stunning hat trick to put her side in the gold medal match and that was the best sign yet that the Aussies are on song ahead of their showdown with New Zealand.

The victor of that match will progress through to the semi-finals and the loser will be out of medal contention. With four tries on the board by half-time, England continued to pile the pressure on their neighbours in the second half with Emily Scott and a brace from Amy Wilson-Hardy but then faced a nervous wait to see if it would be enough for a semi-final spot.

"We have to take the opportunities as they come and be patient".

The Australians have headed straight for the ice baths and after that, they will strap preparing to strap the recovery boots on and analyse where they can attack New Zealand.

"We're devastated. you can't fault the effort we put in but we don't like losing", Walsh said.

New Zealand celebrate the try of Regan Ware, bottom, on Sunday.

The Australian women now lead the World Series overall standings with 40 points, ahead of New Zealand, Canada and Russian Federation at 30 points.

Following a Canada try just before half-time, Jess Breach's first score in Australia restored the three-try advantage.

The Canadian women's rugby sevens team will be playing for a bronze medal after a 33-7 loss to Australia.

The Kiwis, who overcame a mumps scare before the competition, led 12-0 early but had to withstand a powerful comeback from the Australians, who took the final into extra time at 12-12.

Murphy Adaji, coach, Kids N Play, an FCT athletics club that produced Chukwuma said: "I give God the glory for her performance".
