Swansea City picked up a vital point in their search for Premier League safety against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

That was something an Everton side grasping for any kind of fluency allowed them to do and Jordan Ayew - back in the side following a three-match ban for his red card in last month's 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town - crowned an enterprising display with a fine 71st-minute finish.

Everton, which was largely outplayed during a frantic contest, had taken a scruffy lead two minutes before halftime when Kyle Naughton diverted the ball into his own net.

From the resulting corner, Federico Fernández met Carroll's delivery from the right and powered a goalbound header but Cenk Tosun manning the near post headed off the line. Michael Keane's header off a deep throw-in fell invitingly to Carroll but the Blues' keeper saved his guided header with a neat, diving catch in the first minute after the restart. Ayew's lovely first-time pass released his brother Andre through on goal but the forward's shot was tame and straight at Jordan Pickford.

But if that was the signal for Carvalhal's side to press on and win the game, then moments later they were left grateful for a big miss by Seamus Coleman, who rounded off a flowing Everton move by crashing a close range shot against the bar from Walcott's low cross. Allardyce's response was to replace Bolasie with Funes Mori - presumably to try to shut up shop, yet Swansea should have scored again.

But 1-1 was how it finished, and while Southampton's defeat to Chelsea earlier in the day meant the draw edged Carvalhal's side further away from the bottom three - the manager and his players will know that on the balance of play it was two points dropped.
