My data has harvested, sold by Cambridge Analytica, says Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg’s Ex Speechwriter Is Calling BS On His Claims Of Ignorance

The second day of Mark Zuckerberg's testimony to Congress answered some important questions: that is to say, it showed which questions the Facebook CEO was reluctant to answer honestly.

"Every time someone chooses to share, they choose who they want to share it with", said Zuckerberg. "Even if someone isn't logged in, we track certain information, like how many pages they're accessing, as a security measure".

The Facebook chief also told the panel that his company had introduced new privacy controls, but stopped short of saying he would be willing to alter the company's business model to better protect user privacy. Facebook told some users that "one of your friends" used Facebook to log into a now-banned personality quiz app called This Is Your Digital Life and the app misused the information collected, including public profiles, page likes, birthday and current city, by sharing it with the political data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook was getting to the bottom of exactly what Cambridge Analytica did and telling everyone affected. If true, Facebook may be subject to significant fines.

Speaking in the wake of a scandal over the massive leak of data to a British political consultant, Zuckerberg reiterated that the company had shut down the pipeline that allowed such data, including his own, to slip into the hands of third parties.

"The only thing that I was surprised at was there was a listing of about 10 companies in the advertising area that had my email address".

Regulation is certainly one way to catch up on protecting people's data privacy, according to Emily Laidlaw, an associate professor of law at the University of Calgary.

In response the social network boss said: "Yes, there will always be a version of Facebook that is free". When I went back later to see what I could find out, that post had vanished, but I was able to find details in the Facebook Help system. Stressing that there is an online propaganda "arms race" with Russian Federation and it was important to make sure no one interferes in any more elections including in India, Zuckerberg told Congress that his own personal data was "improperly shared". Beginning this Monday, Facebook has started to notify those users whose data have been breached.

"It was my mistake, and I'm sorry", Zuckerberg said during an appearance before a U.S. House of Representatives committee Wednesday.

While you're at it, take the time to look over the other apps that you've granted access to your Facebook account, and disable any ones you no longer need.

But Jim Steyer, president of San Francisco-based Common Sense Media, which is part of the alliance of children's advocacy groups that in January asked Facebook to pull the plug on Messenger Kids, has his doubts. Soon users began examining what else Facebook could use if given permission by the user.

Yet, when asked if his data had been improperly used, he replied: "Yes". Zuckerberg agreed: "If there's an imminent threat of harm, we're going to take a conservative position on that and make sure that we flag that and understand that more broadly".
