Orban-led Hungary's Ruling Coalition Wins Election, Gets Parliamentary Majority

Countless Hungarians Protest Against Chief

But its two-thirds majority remained in doubt until ballots from overseas - which could have changed the outcome in several voting districts - were counted.

In the election campaign Orban projected himself as the defender of Hungary's Christian culture against Muslim migration into Europe, an image which resonated with millions of voters, especially in rural areas.

Fidesz received 49 percent of national party list votes and its candidates won 91 of 106 single-member constituencies, majority in rural areas.

Orban's right-wing Eurosceptic party, Fidesz, won two-thirds of the parliamentary seat last week, with the prime minister campaigning heavily on an anti-immigration stance.

"Viktor Orban has forgotten where he came from", Ors Lanyi, one of the organisers told the crowd, which responded with loud boos upon hearing the prime minister's name. "We'll march as long as needed".

Jobbik and the Socialist-led alliance will take up 26 and 20 seats respectively.

The Democratic Coalition (DK) secured nine seats, while the Politics Can Be Different party received eight seats.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Budapest to march against the re-election of Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban.

The demonstration was attended by representatives of several opposition parties, the exact number of protesters was not reported.

Orban's opponents meanwhile have complained that election rules approved by parliament in 2012 have rigged the system in Fidesz's favour.

There was also "a pervasive overlap of state and ruling party resources", the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe said in a report rejected by Mr Orban's ruling party.

Alleged irregularities at some polling stations last Sunday as well as an IT system outage at the National Elections Office have prompted some opposition parties to demand a recount. Speakers demanded free and fair elections and called another protest for next Saturday.
