Saudi Arabia condemns Iran in wake of missile strikes in Syria

A source from the Arab League told Asharq Al-Awsat that the kings, presidents and leaders of 17 countries will attend the summit.

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, inaugurated the 29th Arab League Summit in Dhahran on Sunday at the King Abdulaziz International Cultural Center.

"We are confident that the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia of this Arab Summit's session at this critical phase will benefit all our countries, which will make them, God willing, able to move forward to promote joint action and preserve Arab national security", the King said.

The heads of the Arab League states condemn the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian authorities, according to the final statement of the Arab League Summit.

There was little mention of Syria, whose president Bashar al Assad was not invited to the summit. He commended the US, UK and France for Saturday's attack, saying when a ruthless regime commits war crimes, the worldwide community has the right to take action and save innocent civilians.

"We renew our strong condemnation of Iran's terrorist acts in the Arab region and reject its blatant interference in the affairs of Arab countries", the king said.

Sheikh Tamim returned to Doha on Saturday from a USA trip where he met President Donald Trump, who had publicly sided with the Saudis and Emiratis early in the crisis, but is now pushing for a resolution to restore Gulf Arab unity and maintain a united front against Iran.

In a ministerial meeting that was held on Thursday, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir said that Palestine and the situation there will top discussions at the Arab summit.

Saudi Arabia is likely to seek Arab support to pile the pressure on Iran, an analyst told AFP. The two regional titans, locked in proxy wars in Syria and in Saudi Arabia's southern neighbor Yemen, back opposing parties in Iraq and Lebanon.
