Trump Launches Airstrikes on Syria; Russia, Iran Warn of Consequences

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has condemned joint airstrikes by the USA, the United Kingdom and France on Syria as "crime", describing the leaders of the three Western states as "criminals", PressTV reports.

It was the first time in 30 years that an Israeli jet was lost in a combat situation and led to an extensive retaliation by Israel with additional strikes against both the Syrian missile batteries and Iranian military targets in the war-torn country.

Speaking from the White House, Trump says, "To Iran and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said an attack on Syria by the United States, France and Britain on Saturday was a crime and would not achieve any gains.

Back in February, Israel responded to Iran sending the drone by launching a flurry of 122 airstrikes against the Iranians in Syria.

"It appears from very initial reports that we're hitting some very specific targets and facilities that seem to be connected to the production, development, and usage of chemical weapons", he said. "The American, French presidents and the British Prime Minister are criminal", he said.

On Monday, seven Iranian personnel were among 14 people killed in an early morning strike on the T-4 airbase in Syria, with regime allies Iran and Russian Federation blaming Israel for the attack. It was not immediately clear whether Trump meant the allied military operation would extend beyond an initial nighttime round of missile strikes.

"He adds ominously, "Hopefully someday we'll get along with Russian Federation, and maybe even Iran, but maybe not".

The attacks were described by the Pentagon as precise and aimed exclusively at the regime's chemical weapons facilities. "We were expecting at least more airfields, ground force and naval bases to come under attack", said Arash Aramesh, a national security and foreign policy analyst.

He reaffirmed Russia's view that a purported chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma that prompted the strike was a fake.

Meanwhile, May said the missile strike, created to minimise civilian casualties, was aimed at deterring further use of chemical weapons and was not an attempt to topple the Syrian government.

"Syria continues to carry out murderous actions and to be a base for these and other actions, including by Iran, that puts its territory, forces and leadership in danger", the terse statement said.
