UEFA Champions League draw: Real Madrid to face Bayern Munich in semifinals

Champions League: Bayern to face Real, Liverpool to play Roma in semis

Champions League: Bayern to face Real, Liverpool to play Roma in semis

With European heavyweights Real Madrid and Bayern Munich also in the draw, most Liverpool fans were hoping for Roma. "We're up against the Champions League winners", Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said.

"I think if we get a Liverpool vs Real Madrid final then Real will be very scared and I have no doubt Liverpool could do it".

The second legs are to take place on May 1-2 respectively.

Reacting to the draw, Roma captain Daniele De Rossi told his club's website: "We have seen the draw now and, it would have changed little whoever we had got". "Where would they (Roma) be if Mo was still there?"

The pairing of American-owned clubs pits a Liverpool team tied to the Boston Red Sox against Roma president James Pallotta, who has a stake in the Boston Celtics.

Both return games will be played the following week. The final is scheduled for May 26 at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine.

Arsene Wenger's team will have to nullify the threat of Diego Costa, who scored three goals in six games against the Gunners during his time at Chelsea, and also find a way to keep Antoine Griezmann, Atleti's 25-goal top scorer, quiet.

While Bayern have clinched yet another Bundesliga title this term, the club have not enjoyed a campaign without turbulence, with coach Carlo Ancelotti sacked midseason and replaced by Heynckes.

Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the Europa League in a mouth-watering clash of two big clubs that have taken a backseat in their domestic leagues in recent years. Heynckes also coached Madrid to the title in 1998 - another trophy-winning farewell before he was sacked.

Atletico, beaten finalists in the Champions League in 2014 and 2016, will still be strong favourites to win this semifinal, however.

This season, Liverpool is the only unbeaten team despite playing the most games, 12, after coming through the playoff round in August.

"At least one of my teams are in the final!"

Roma have been drawn against Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals after the Italian side produced a historic comeback as they beat Barcelona 3-0 to qualify on away goals after they had lost the first leg 4-1 at Camp Nou.

"Liverpool will beat Roma again this time around and then go on to win the final itself".
