France has not declared war on Syria regime: Macron

Kotzias: Too late for FYROM to join NATO in July

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he was ready to talk to all, including Russian Federation and Iran, to pave the way for inclusive political transition in the war-torn Syria.

And in a reference to Trump's raging on Twitter at Russian Federation over the possibility of strikes, Macron added: "The second thing is that we have also convinced him that he must limit his strikes to chemical weapons, at a time when there was a media furore via tweet, as I'm sure you noticed".

Saturday's strikes on Syria were the first major military operation since Macron's election in May previous year.

The wave of strikes had represented the most significant attack against President Bashar al-Assad's government by Western powers in seven years of Syria's civil war.

He reaffirmed that there was proof of chemical attacks, adding: "We had reached a point where these strikes were necessary to give back the (international) community some credibility".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said no further strikes were planned, but that this would be reassessed if more chemical attacks took place.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday that the strikes had been carried out in violation of norms and principles of the global law.

"Of course they are complicit".

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria", he said. Stoltenberg said: "Before the attack took place last night, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies exhausted all other possible ways to address this issue to the U.N. Security Council but ... were blocked by Russian Federation ..."

A tweet from Mr Trump last week about United States missile strikes on Syria had read: "Get ready, Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and "smart".

"They have not used chlorine themselves but they have methodically built the global community's inability to act through diplomatic channels to stop the use of chemical weapons", he said.

And he further argued the operation was legitimate despite not being sanctioned by the United Nations, retorting that under a 2013 United Nations resolution Syria was supposed to destroy its chemical weapons arsenal.

Macron added that the strikes on Syria had been "perfectly carried out".

The US said 105 missiles were launched and it believed none were intercepted by Syrian defences.

Macron, criticised by the far-left and far-right and part of the conservatives over the attacks, said France, Britain and the United States had "complete worldwide legitimacy to act".
