Kentucky gov. says "I guarantee" child was sexually assaulted during teacher protests

Mary Nishimuta, executive director of the Kentucky Democratic Party, called the comments "inappropriate and perverse".

"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them", Bevin said Friday.

"This is Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin".

Some educators on social media said they would wear black on Monday as a show of solidarity against what they viewed as Gov. Matt Bevin's negative comments about teachers. And the result that can come from that, concern for children who are left vulnerable as a result of that.

"Many people have been confused or hurt or just misunderstand what it was that I was trying to communicate", Bevin said. The responsibility for such things falls on the person doing the speaking.

Bevin appeared to attributed the negative response to his comments to a misunderstanding saying the way people interpreted them or the way he said them lead also to unintended consequences. I hurt a lot of people.

But, he said, "The responsibility for communicating things falls on the person, in large measure, who's doing the speaking". And to the occasions after I do not do it effectively, that is on me. However, officials from both Erlanger-Elsemere and Bellevue said Bevin's proposed education cuts - not the one-day absence of teachers - would "severely reduce" services that provide forms of childcare before and after school, including kindergarten, preschool and tutoring. All with degrees in public education.

"I grew up surrounded by an appreciation that this is not an easy task", he said of teaching.

Acting-House Speaker David Osborne said he didn't understand why Bevin made the statement because he didn't hear of any problems that arose from the protests. Truly, I'm grateful to you.

"It is my accountability to symbolize you, not exclusively after I'm talking to you, however after I'm talking in your behalf in methods which might be clear, which might be understood, that do not harm folks and do not confuse folks", he stated. And so to the extent that I do that well, great, and to the times that I don't do it well, that's on me.

Bevin apologized a number of occasions in Sunday's video and stated many individuals misunderstood and "didn't absolutely admire" his earlier assertion. We have an incredible opportunity, incredible upside potential here in the Commonwealth. "It is not my intent to hurt anybody in this process". We need each other.

In our coverage area, police have not alerted us to any crimes against children being reported on Friday.
