Russia says alleged chemical attack in Syria staged by UK

The Russian military likely was not in the vicinity of the attacked locations however, as Dunford acknowledged that the United States provided flight plan data regarding the offensive to Russian forces via the Syrian deconfliction line.

Volunteer first responders and activists claimed a chemical attack by the Syrian government killed more than 40 people in the town of Douma, which drew worldwide outrage and prompted Washington and its allies to consider a military response.

Russia's military head has warned that Moscow will target USA sites if the latter puts the former's personnel at risk.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov upped the diplomatic ante earlier in the day Friday when he called the allegations of a Syrian chemical attack a "fabrication" by British intelligence.

Maj Gen Konashenkov said Britain was "directly involved in the provocation".

French President Emmanuel Macron also said he had "proof" that the Syrian government had attacked Douma with chemical weapons.

"Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible", the statement went on to say. The Kremlin readout said that Putin warned against rushing to blame the Syrian government before conducting a "thorough and objective probe".

Top military officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, warned Trump during an afternoon meeting Thursday that he risks escalating USA involvement in Syria if he goes forward with the type of aggressive bombing campaign he has pushed over the past week, according to U.S. and Western officials briefed on the conversation.

"Our warnings have been left unheard".

In response to the US military action, Russia's ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said in a statement that Russian Federation had warned that "such actions will not be left without consequences".

Biological samples from the area of the attack in Syria have tested positive for chlorine and a sarin-like nerve agent, according to a U.S. official who's familiar with the U.S. analysis of the test results. "Russian Federation can complain all it wants about fake news, but no one is buying its lies and its cover-ups".

Another highly placed Russian politician likened President Trump to Adolf Hitler and said the air assault is regarded as a move against Russia.

Nebenzia also called for the UN Security Council to meet again on Friday to discuss the possibility of Western military action.

"Hopefully, someday we'll get along with Russian Federation, and maybe even Iran - but maybe not".

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says the use of chemical weapon against civilians in a Damascus suburb is "unforgivable" but says Turkey is urging all sides to refrain from actions that will cause further turmoil in Syria.

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will send experts to Syria, who will start an investigation on Saturday.

Contrary to the US' accusations, the Syrian government has rejected all claims, stating that it wasn't behind the attack.
