Team SA lands home after Commonwealth Games success

The show continued with a performance by Ricki-Lee and The Koi Boys before Anthony Callea took the stage to perform "You Should be Dancing" accompanied by the athletes. "Lots of people say road cycling at the Commonwealth Games is not a big deal, but you know what?"

Despite the finale being heavily criticised, Gold Coast Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman Peter Beattie labelled the last 11 days as "innovative" and "inspirational". In fact, in 2018, the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Sport are more relevant than ever before.

They won 44 medals on the Gold Coast - 14 more than the team's pre-Games target and only nine fewer than four years ago at home in Glasgow.

"I'm sorry, you're being way too polite", Griggs said, adding that the decision was "wrecking tradition".

"From its beginnings. the Games were always created to be more than just a sporting spectacle".

Beattie also conceded speeches at the ceremony went for too long. Hosts Australia, were the overall winners after amassing 80 gold, 59 silver, 59 bronze to bring their medals total to 198.

Disappointments: Despite winning eight medals, Northern Ireland's boxers may well feel there should have been some golds among them. The final medal came on Sunday as the men's doubles badminton pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty claimed Silver after losing to England's Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge in the gold medal match.

Australia dominated in the swimming pool and in track cycling, while Jamaica felt the absence of the retired Bolt as they struggled in the sprint events.

Indians athletes set the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on fire. The teenager had to settle for silver but she instantly won admirers with her performance.

And while she did not win a medal, 11-year-old Anna Hursey more than impressed in the table tennis, helping Wales to the quarter-finals of the team event.

South Africa's Olympic champion Caster Semenya also highlighted her versatility with a commanding 800m-1,500m double at Carrara Stadium.

Silver medals were grabbed by Mehuli Ghosh, Heena Sidhu, Sawant, Anjum Moudgil and bronze medals by Ravi Kumar, Om Mitharwal (two bronze), Apurvi Chandela and Ankur Mittal.

But that didn't cut it for the media with a host of reporters turning on Commonwealth Games organisers following their dramatic failure.

New Zealands's women's Rugby team beat Australia in the final with a try in sudden death extra time, winning 17 - 12, while England's netball team also shocked title favorites Australia with a decisive penalty shot in the last seconds of the game winning 52 - 51.

"You did us proud", said Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, as the Commonwealth flag was handed to 2022 hosts Birmingham.

The closing ceremony has been criticised as underwhelming, with Seven Network presenters slamming organisers for not providing vision of athletes entering Carrara Stadium.
