Thousands of Canadians are showing their hockey colours for Jersey Day

It comes six days after the Humboldt Broncos team bus was involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of 16 people.

Bruins coach Chris Lewgood says the visit to the crash site was a first step towards closure for a lot of his players.

"Last week, we had a national tournament here in Green Bay, so there's probably a bunch of teams, a bunch of buses that were all closely tied to this tragedy and they were travelling as well", says Officer Matt Knutson.

In Pembroke and across the County of Renfrew, people of all ages donned jerseys at school or at work as they proudly shared their support across social media.

It started with #PutYourSticks out, a spontaneous trend on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram which saw people post photos of hockey sticks placed on their porches in a salute to those killed in the crash.

After TSN broadcaster Brian Munz launched the touching #SticksOutForHumboldt and #PutYourSticksOut tribute by placing his hockey stick on his front porch, fellow Canadians followed suite.

Lt. Andy Opperman has two kids who play hockey. They wanted to show the victims' families that they are thinking of them.

He says his kids were touched by the tragedy in Canada.

"They know the customized", Tom said. "And they understand. And they're really close".

Prince Edward County councillors, showing their support for this year's Nature Matters booklet, also donned jerseys in honour of Humboldt.

Marie Domingue, left, and her son, Ethan, 5, take part in jersey day for the Humboldt Broncos hockey team and their families. "Here we have Green Bay and De Pere, all the Valley, Waupaca, Manitowoc, Shawano".
