Margot Robbie Pushed for a Female Director on the Harley Quinn Spin-Off—and Got One

DC Comics is set to produce a Harley Quinn feature starring Margot Robbie, building on her character introduced in Suicide Squad.

Give another high five to Warner Bros and DC.

Yan will not direct the "Gotham City Sirens" or "Harley vs Joker" films also in contention at Warner Bros. This makes Yan the second female director to make a DC movie, after Patty Jenkins, and the first Asian woman ever to direct a superhero movie.

Yan is a former Wall Street Journal reporter who directed numerous short films before making her feature debut.

DC Comics' Birds of Prey are an worldwide crimefighting team featuring heroines such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). The script was written by Christina Hodson, so most of the talent will be female.

Let us know your thoughts about Cathy Yan being picked as the Harley Quinn director and, even better, if you have seen her indie Dead Pigs, which won an acting ensemble award at Sundance in January. Production is expected to begin at the end of this year after Robbie wraps filming on Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. In addition to this film, a sequel to Suicide Squad is in the works with Gavin O'Connor directing.

Warner Bros. knew Harley Quinn was a breakout character from Suicide Squad, and it's interesting to see that they've made a decision to go with Birds of Prey over Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, or a Harley & Joker movie.
