LHC bars Pemra from airing anti-judiciary content

A sou motu has been taken by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Lahore High Court's decision to bar Pemra from transmission of anti-judiciary speeches by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and leaders of their party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The court instructed PEMRA to decide on all complaints regarding the broadcast of anti-judiciary remarks by Sharif and his daughter within 15 days, and to ensure that such content is not broadcast by anyone. Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi, who headed a three-judge bench, said the court would monitor the regulatory body's actions in the next two weeks.

The former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday said the premiership was not the bed of roses, and added the World had changed and they also needed to be changed.

Accountability Court-I Judge Mohammad Bashir has been conducting the proceedings since September a year ago.

Sharif, 68, is facing three corruption cases linked to the Panama Papers case in an anti-graft court.

The political future of Sharif, who leads the countrys most powerful political family and his party (PML-N), has been hanging in the balance since then.

Multiple petitions have been filed in different courts against them over alleged contempt of court.

Nawaz Sharif said they shouldn't repeat the previous mistakes.

Naqvi said that while Article 19 of the Constitution allowed fair criticism of the judiciary, not every person should be allowed to criticise the courts just for the sake of exercising the right, The Express Tribune reported.

The petitioner said PEMRA did not block these hateful and ridiculing remarks passed against the judiciary.
